Most of them also miss by five years or more on a bad photo, and almost none explain why. What the model is really looking at

An age predictor is a computer vision model trained on a large set of face photos with known ages. It never learns a rule like "wrinkles mean 50." It learns statistical patterns: which combinations of features tend to show up at 24, at 41, at 67. When you upload a photo, it maps your face onto those patterns and returns the age range that fits best.

The cues that carry the most weight are the ones that change steadily over a lifetime:

  • Skin texture. Fine lines around the eyes and mouth, pore visibility, and how evenly light scatters off the skin. This is the strongest signal after about age 30.
  • Facial proportions. Children have larger eyes relative to the face and a lower nasal bridge. Those ratios shift through the teens and settle in the twenties.
  • Soft tissue and structure. Fat distribution in the cheeks, jawline definition, and the depth of the nasolabial folds move in predictable directions with age.
  • Hair. Greying, hairline position and eyebrow density all contribute, though the model treats them as supporting evidence rather than the main verdict.
  • Eyes. Lid heaviness, under-eye contour and the brightness of the sclera change with age and are hard to fake with makeup.

None of these is decisive on its own. The model weighs all of them together, which is why a single grey hair won't add ten years but a combination of grey hair, deeper folds and thinner lips will.

Why the same face gets different answers

If you've tried two tools and received two ages, or the same tool on two photos, the difference is almost always in the input, not the person.

Lighting. Harsh overhead light casts shadows into every fold and reads as older. Flat, front-facing daylight fills those folds and reads as younger. A ring light can shave years off a reading without any retouching.

Resolution and compression. A low-resolution or heavily compressed image blurs skin texture. The model loses its strongest age signal and has to lean on proportions, which pushes results toward the middle of the range. Screenshots of photos are a common culprit.

Makeup and grooming. Foundation smooths texture, contouring changes apparent structure, and a fresh haircut or trimmed beard shifts the hair signal. None of this is cheating, but it explains why a work headshot and a weekend snapshot can come back years apart.

Training data. Models learn from the faces they were shown. If a dataset underrepresents a particular ethnicity, skin tone or age band, predictions for people in that group are noisier. This is a known, documented limitation across the field and one of the reasons a result should be treated as a range rather than a verdict.

How accurate should you expect it to be

On a good photo, current models typically land within a few years for adults in their twenties through fifties. Accuracy drops at the extremes: infants and toddlers change fast enough that a few months matters, and past 70 the visible cues plateau, so the model has less to separate a 72-year-old from an 80-year-old.

The practical takeaway: if the tool says 34 and you're 37, that's a normal result. If it says 24 or 48, something in the photo is misleading it, and it's worth trying again with the checklist below.

How to get a fair reading

  1. Use a recent, unedited photo straight from the camera, not a screenshot or a downloaded copy.
  2. Face the camera directly at eye level.
  3. Keep a neutral expression, mouth closed.
  4. Shoot in soft, even light, ideally near a window with no direct sun.
  5. Remove glasses, hats and anything covering the hairline or jaw.
  6. Skip filters, including the default portrait mode smoothing on most phones.
  7. Fill the frame with your face. A face that takes up a tenth of the image gives the model very little to work with.

Run the same photo through the tool twice and you'll get the same answer. Run two photos taken minutes apart in different light and you may not. That's the model being consistent while the input isn't.
